August 13th - NUJ Vigil, Downing Street

Following the murder of Al Jazeera journalists by the IDF the National Union of Journalists held vigils up and down the UK and in Ireland. In a statement the NUJ said "At least seven people were killed overall, including camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa, their assistant Mohammed Noufal, and correspondents Mohammed Qreiqeh and Anas al-Sharif. Freelance photojournalist Mohammed Al-Khaldi was also killed in the same airstrike.", "Last week the NUJ joined the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate in condemning the smear campaign against Palestinian journalists. According to the IFJ, at least 196 journalists and media workers including 181 Palestinians have been killed since 7 October 2023". I found this to be one of the harder demonstrations to cover, the atmosphere was rather very much depressing and I found myself at one point crying alongside many other journalists. I was also filled with a sense of anger, journalists should never be the story yet time and time again they are in Gaza/Palestine thanks to the repeated targeted murder of journalists alongside aid workers and civilians. Foreign media has not been allowed into Gaza since October 2023 and Isreal has targeted what local press exists to hide their genocide. I could continue but what more can I say. It was still a very powerful demo/vigil with journalists from the NUJ and beyond coming together.
